We create interactive electronic books with added value for our clients, intended for publication on Apple Books, where we maintain high-quality standards. While the standard export from the Pages application generates a basic EPUB, it lacks interactive links, videos, or animations. Originally, we had to manually add these elements every time the source content changed, which was time-consuming. Our goal was to automate these adjustments efficiently.
We developed a FileMaker application that streamlines the e-book creation process. Users prepare a formatted document in Pages, which is then exported as an EPUB. The application automatically unpacks this file, adds images, adjusts formatting, and creates links to chapters.
A key component of the solution is a custom plugin for advanced text search and replace. For example, actions can be defined to adjust the book’s formatting to meet Apple Book’s visual requirements.
Once the book materials are ready, the server-side application performs the final EPUB generation with full formatting and optimization for Apple Books. This process is fully automated and can take several hours, resulting in a final EPUB ready for upload to Apple Books.
With the help of this tool, we have already created dozens of books, and thanks to the quality of our work, we have made it to the TOP 10 cookbooks on the iBook Store.
